La Mano del Destino: J. Gonzo

Joining us today is J. Gonzo. We first met Gonzo on a previous episode of Las Platicas when we interviewed him as the artist on Henry Barajas’ project, Voz de Mayo: Tata Rambo. We even had the pleasure of being drawn by Gonzo and included in a panel in the book. Gonzo is with us today to tell us all about his ongoing project, La Mano del Destino, a 6 issue tale of a once-champion Luchador, who, after being betrayed by his friends and unmasked in the ring, agrees to a Faustian bargain with a mysterious promoter. He gains a new power and the identity of La Mano del Destino in order to exact revenge upon his betrayers. Gonzo currently has a Kickstarter campaign running to compile the 6 issues of the book into a trade paperback and publish it into an English/Spanish flip book with tons of awesome bonus material.

Las Platicas: Ryan Tavarez

Joining us today is Ryan Taverez. By day, Ryan is a concept development artist in the Garment Design industry. He has provided art for clients such as Supreme, Nike, Champion, the NFL, and New Era. But by night he is a comic book artist. Self-taught in Penciling, Inking, Coloring, and lettering, Ryan is a one-man show. He’s the lead artist on Motor City Mo by 3 Y’s Media and has been making comics for 10 years with his self publish studio Attack of The Rivals. Ryan currently has a Kickstarter campaign running to publish a trade paperback of his series, Nomads and he is here today to tell us all about it. Welcome, Ryan!

Greg Anderson Elysee founder of Webway Comics and creator of Is'nana the Were-Spider Comic

Joining us today is Greg Anderson-Elysee. Greg is a Brooklyn born Haitian-American writer, film-maker, model and educator. He is the writer and creator of the award winning comic book/graphic novel series, Is’nana the Were-Spider, a coming of age dark fantasy book about the son of Anansi the Spider, drawing inspiration from Black myths, folklore, and spirituality. He is also the creator of the sci-fi series Marassa and other works. Through various platforms, Greg fights for more inclusion and better representation when it comes to people of all colors and sexuality.

Giulie Speziani co-founder of Ginger Rabbit Studio & co-created Cash & Carry

Giulie Speziani co-created, Cash & Carry, about two junior high detectives, Dallas Cash and Inez Carrie. She has also self-published other indie comics such as She Hears Voices, By the Slice, Golden Age, and 1 Night on Earth. She is co-founder of Ginger Rabbit Studios with husband Rob Harrington.

Las Platicas: Gabe Cheng talks about Into the Wilderness

Welcome to another episode of Las Platicas, a show hosted by Comadres y Comics Podcast joining us today is Gabe Cheng. You may remember Gabe from our Las Platicas Episodes 5 and 16 where he spoke to us about his project For Molly a comic about an anti-social talking dog, living alone in the New Jersey forest who helps a recently divorced outsider rescue his sister from a hidden evil. Today he is with us to tell us about his project, Into the Wilderness, a story that takes place within the same world as For Molly. After a deadly explosion rocks the New Jersey forest, a talking dog and her stoic human partner go on the hunt for a killer. Welcome, Gabe!

Breena Nuñez co-founder of Laneha House, cartoonist and educator

Today we have the pleasure of having Breena Nuñez with us. Breena is an Afro-Guatemalan-Salvadoran cartoonist and educator whose self-published works are personal, autobiographical comics that include everything from personal diary entries to politics and even history lessons. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker: Daily Shouts and the Nib. She’s had her work in anthologies like Tales From La Vida: A Latinx Comics Anthology, Drawing Power (Eisner Award Winner 2020), and Be Gay, Do Comics! (Ignatz Award Winner 2020). She’s been a professor at California College of the Arts and is also the co-founder of Laneha House, a Bay Area-based small press that solely publishes the work of Lawrence Lindell, Breenz Nuñez and the BAYlies. Laneha House is built on the foundation of family, love of comics, zines and coffee. Projects include comics, graphic novels, art books, zines and limited edition box sets. Their first project was released in January 2021.
